Audit log for CrewAI
A CrewAI crew splits work across agents with roles, and agents delegate to each other. When something goes wrong, the question is not only what was done but which agent did it and on whose instruction. An audit log for a crew must preserve that structure.
What to capture
- Each task and the agent assigned to it.
- Every LLM call, with the model and token usage.
- Every tool call, with arguments and result.
- Delegations between agents, so the chain of responsibility is visible.
Capturing it: OpenTelemetry
CrewAI is a Python framework. The low-friction path is an OpenTelemetry instrumentation for CrewAI (available from the OpenInference and OpenLLMetry projects), which emits spans for crews, tasks, agents, LLM calls and tools. Export them as OTLP JSON.
A few things to set deliberately:
- Content capture. Decide whether prompts and outputs go into spans. Traceability usually needs arguments of actions more than full prompts (see GDPR and agent logs).
- Sampling. Audit evidence needs every run, not a sample. Turn sampling off for the trace pipeline you use as evidence.
- Export destination. Keep a copy outside the observability tool your team administers.
From trace to evidence
A trace export is data your pipeline produced; nothing in it proves it was not changed afterwards. Two steps close the gap: sign and chain the events as close to the source as possible, and have an independent party counter-sign a digest of the evidence at a known time (see tamper-evident logs).
For multi-agent systems, Article 72 also asks providers of high-risk systems to consider interactions with other AI systems in their monitoring. A crew trace is exactly that record.
Check your own logs
Paste a Vetro ledger or an OpenTelemetry GenAI trace export into the free checker: it verifies integrity and shows which record-keeping obligations your evidence covers, in your browser. When you need something to hand to an auditor or a customer, the countersigned EU AI Act report costs 29 USD, one-off: an ed25519 counter-signature over your evidence plus a mapping to the articles, including an explicit list of what the log cannot show.
