EU AI Act Article 86: the right to an explanation of individual decisions
Article 86 gives a person affected by a decision taken by a deployer on the basis of output from certain high-risk systems, with legal or similarly significant effects on their health, safety or fundamental rights, the right to obtain from the deployer clear and meaningful explanations of the role of the system in the decision and the main elements of the decision.
You cannot explain what you did not record
Reconstructing why an agent answered as it did needs the inputs, the model version, the tool results and the policy verdicts, in order.
Make it retrievable per decision
Index runs by a case identifier so one request retrieves one run. Replay can show the same inputs produce the same recorded path.
Gaps to state honestly
A record of the steps is not a causal explanation of a model, and personal data in it falls under GDPR retention and access rules.
How Vetro helps
Vetro writes every model call, tool call and policy decision to a hash-chained, ed25519-signed ledger that anyone can verify with the public key. Vetro Attest verifies a ledger or OTLP GenAI trace for free and, for 49 USD, issues a counter-signed report mapping the evidence to the EU AI Act, including an explicit list of what the log cannot show. This is technical evidence, not legal advice.
