Audit log for Google Agent Development Kit agents

Google's Agent Development Kit (ADK) structures an application as agents that can call tools and delegate to sub-agents, with session state carried across turns. As with any multi-agent framework, the audit question is not only what a model or tool returned, but which agent made the call and on whose instruction.

What to record

Capturing it: OpenTelemetry

ADK has built-in tracing support for observability backends, and Google's own guidance points integrations at OpenTelemetry-compatible exporters. If that is already configured, export the trace as OTLP JSON and treat it as first evidence: check whether it uses the GenAI semantic conventions (gen_ai.*) and whether prompt/response content is captured before assuming completeness (see OpenTelemetry GenAI traces as evidence). Turn off sampling for the export path you keep as evidence.

Capturing it: at the call site

For a signed, tamper-evident record instead of (or alongside) a trace export, wrap the model client behind your ADK agent with the Vetro core API:

import { Vetro } from '@vetro/core';

const vetro = new Vetro({ policy: myPolicy });
const run = vetro.startRun({ name: 'adk-agent', meta: { agent: 'router' } });

run.llmRequest({ provider: 'vertex', model, params });
// ... call the model ...
run.llmResponse({ provider: 'vertex', model, usage });

Wrap each sub-agent's tool dispatcher with run.toolCall / run.toolResult the same way, and record delegation between agents as a plain event (run.event('annotation', { kind: 'delegation', from, to })) so the structure survives in the ledger, not only in application logs.

Multi-agent delegation and Article 72

ADK's sub-agent delegation is the kind of interaction between AI systems that Article 72 post-market monitoring asks providers of high-risk systems to account for. A ledger that records which sub-agent acted, not just that "the system" acted, is what makes that monitoring possible after the fact.

Check your own logs

Paste a Vetro ledger or an OpenTelemetry GenAI trace export into the free checker: it verifies integrity and shows which record-keeping obligations your evidence covers, in your browser. Not sure if your ADK system is high-risk? Start with the high-risk classifier. When you need something to hand to an auditor or a customer, Vetro Attest issues a countersigned EU AI Act report for 29 USD, one-off.
