Vetro Attest vs. Drata for the EU AI Act
*Engineering comparison, not legal advice. Drata's features change quickly; check their documentation for the current state.*
Drata automates compliance: it tests controls continuously and collects evidence for an auditor. Vetro Attest works one level below: it verifies and countersigns the logs your AI system produced, so the evidence is the record itself.
What Drata does well
- Automated control tests through integrations with cloud, identity, device and HR systems;
- Framework coverage including SOC 2, ISO 27001 and ISO/IEC 42001 for AI management systems, with policy templates;
- Risk register and vendor reviews, plus a trust center and questionnaire automation;
- Auditor collaboration in the same workspace.
For a company building a certifiable security and AI management programme, it is a strong choice.
What control monitoring does not give you
- A test that logging is on is not the log. Art. 12 of the EU AI Act asks that logs make the system's operation traceable; a passing control does not show what a specific run recorded.
- Evidence collected by you, about you. An export from your own systems can in principle be changed by the party with an interest in the outcome.
- No independent timestamp per run. Nothing outside your organisation pins an agent's tool calls and human interventions to a moment.
- Enterprise pricing. Plans are quote-based annual contracts; a team that needs evidence for one AI system pays for a whole programme.
None of this is a flaw in Drata; it is outside what the tool is for.
What Vetro Attest adds
Paste an OTLP/JSON trace (OpenTelemetry GenAI conventions) or a signed Vetro ledger; it is rebuilt into a hash-chained ledger and checked for free. For 49 USD, one-off:
- an EU AI Act report mapping the trace onto Art. 12, 14, 19 and 26;
- an ed25519 countersignature over digest, event count and timestamp, verifiable by anyone against our public key.
No logs because you deploy third-party AI? The document pack (99 USD) drafts a FRIA (Art. 27), an Annex IV draft, an AI literacy plan (Art. 4) and Art. 50 notices from one form, countersigned. A draft to review, not legal advice.
When to choose which
- Choose Drata for SOC 2, ISO 27001 or ISO 42001 certification and continuous control monitoring.
- Choose Vetro Attest when the question is "prove what this AI system did", and you need an answer in minutes.
- Use both: upload the attestation as evidence against the AI logging control. Drata shows the control; the countersignature shows the record.
